All you need to know about “Barbie Botox” AKA Trapezius Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Barbie Botox, AKA Trapezius Anti-Wrinkle Injections is the term we use for the treatment of the trapezius muscle. What’s that I hear you ask? Your trapezius muscles , also called the traps, is the triangle looking muscle that goes from your neck to your shoulders. Raise up and down your shoulders and these muscles engage and relax.

How does the trapezius muscle work?

Barbie Botox is carried out with, you guessed it. Our anti-wrinkle injections treatment. The treatment is quick, pretty much painless and is increasing in popularity. We inject anti-wrinkle injections into the trapezius muscle using a small needle, anti-wrinkle injections causes muscle to relax and after a few weeks post treatment the smaller gets a little smaller and less bulky. The result is elongation of the neck line and a softness of that sometimes bulky looking neck/shoulder area. 

How long does it take for Barbie Botox to work?

Typically anti-wrinkle injections takes 4-6 days for it to start working and is at its maximum effect at 14 days. Unlike lines and wrinkles, anti-wrinkle injections in the trapezius takes another week or two to start to show its cosmetic effects. Think about it like turning down the volume in a stereo, the muscle slowly starts to relax and then softens resulting in a less squared out neck like. We typically review patients between the 3-4 week mark for this treatment to assess the response. 

How does Barbie Botox last ? 

Typically anti-wrinkle injections will last around three months, however for the more functional treatments like masseter anti-wrinkle injections for teeth clenching or trapezius anti-wrinkle injections, the results last approximately 6 months. The reason being, it takes a little time for the muscle to relax and when the anti-wrinkle injections wears off around three months, it again takes time for it to kick back in. We typically recommend patients to go again at the six month mark as it tends to make the next round of anti-wrinkle treatment last even longer, remember that stereo analogy, we keep that volume turned down. 

Who is suitable for Barbie Botox? 

There are two main types of patients that are suitable for Barbie Botox. The first type is what we call the functional patients. Upper back and shoulder pain is one the reasons patients attend clinics for trapezius treatment . By relaxing the trapezius muscle it releases the tension and reduces that tight neck and shoulder pain people can get . Our feedback from patients is that it is highly effective and long lasting when compared to repeated rounds of physics and massage.

The second type of patient has the treatment for more cosmetic results. It is very much a female treatment, although we do treat some male patients , the male anatomy is suited to having thick strong muscles in the traps area. For female patients they feel that a strong trapezius muscle can shorten their neck line and make the shoulder / neck area wider . Summer dresses, wedding dresses and off the shoulder tops tend to expose the area and having a softer transition from neck to shoulder tends to elongate the neck line . Our patients love the soft, regal, elongated swan neck that affects post anti-wrinkle injections to the trapezius muscle. 

Does the Barbie Botox hurt? 

You will feel a small pinch, the treatment is quick and well tolerated by people. The area is photographed before the treatment and again reviewed around the three week mark to compare the results.
